you have many other options:

examples:

AUS-IAH-AMS
AUS-EWR-AMS
AUS-ATL-AMS

Thanks for the tip. Will remember that the next time.

And for the record, the re-routing did not seem automatic. It took 15 minutes for them to find a NW flight to put me on. Unfortunately I had a 6 hr layover at JFK which made it much easier ...
