Delta cancelled my flight AUS-JFK, and sent me on a chase through DTW, so most likely it got lost thereabouts.

Sorry to hear about your bags. Chances are its sitting somewhere with
Delta.
Next time, if they send you around the world to reach the destination next
door, please call them and have them re-route you via a decent path.
Their automatice re-routing is not always the best thing.. unless you want to
collect miles and segments.
