pinhole is correct. essentially, if you go off road, and an inspection of the damage can prove that the car went off road, then your contract is void and no insurance in the world will protect you. However, if your car is not damaged during your trip, or the damage is difficult to see or distinguish by the naked eye at check in, its likely there will be no issue. bottom line, if you get into an accident off road, if its driveable, drive it in and take your chances.
On a side note, dont get caught lying. That could void your personal insurance as well. (insurance fraud).

Most rental agreements clearly state that the vehicle should remain on finished roads at all times - even if it is a capable off-road vehicle. If something were to happen on an unfinished road I think you would be entirely responsible, even if you bought the insurance.

There were no comments when the vehicle was returned. Had they looked under the car they might have had some comments for us.
