Of course it never hurts to ask, but unfortunately medical waivers are a thing of the past (one reason being, medical letters are easily forged and the verification of medical conditions is next to impossible not to mention the administrative issues). With a restricted fare/discount ticket, comes penalties...your circumstances are unfortunate but at least you have the ability to change the date and not lose everything (as you would if they had been tickets to the theater, a concert, or what have you). Of all of the major airlines I know, and I have several friends working for other majors, penalties are seldom if ever waived even on international flights (where medical waivers used to be the norm). Curiousity does strike me though, and it's certainly none of my business, but under what medical circumstances would a doctor tell you to fly at an earlier date? (I can only think of postponing travel for medical issues.)
