Schengen is about immigration. It has nothing to do with customs. With certain exceptions (which I won't go into here) there are no customs controls within the European Union. Customs controls were abolished in 1992 - that's when we started having a blue channel at airports in addition to the usual green and red ones.
One of the major exceptions being HM Customs hassling people buying what they deem to be excessive amounts of alcohol and tobacco products from the other E.U. countries?
I don't think there's no total abolition of customs.
Here's a question: If U.K. residents were to buy over the duty/excise tax-free allowance in some non-E.U. country and come back to the U.K. via, say AMS or FRA, can they use the Blue channel safely?
