In '00 I stayed at the Ibsens Hotel - http://www.ibsenshotel.dk/ which was decently located (not far from Rosenborg Castle) and reasonably priced for clean, modern rooms that were simple but not utterly spartan. Breakfast (and now wireless) are included.
