Could you have been SSSS'ed? My husband and I experimented with this a couple of weeks ago on our way to Hawaii -- we did online checkin at home and printed out the boarding passes just to be safe. When we got to the airport (LAX) we went to the kiosk again so that we could check our bags and had no problem getting a second boarding pass.
