Checking online constantly doesn't always help... I had seat 5C on a YYZ-EWR flight this morning. I had my husband double-check this around 10 PM last night, but I had no email access and could not receive a fax so he couldn't check me in. At the airport this morning around 7:30 (pre-coffee, let me point out, never a good time to find this out ) I discover my seat has been changed to 21C due to the 737 being a different series. Very annoying but at least the middle seat was open!

(OT, this would have been more annoying if it had caused me to miss the NJ Transit train I wanted to take back to the city, but I actually caught it perfectly, making it from a FAR gate at EWR (90s, I think) to my desk at my office in the record gate-to-door time of 1 hour exactly. Not sure I could have cabbed it quicker gate to door.)
