Taxes within the EU are so very transparent that a majority of people in the market -- buyers mostly, but sometimes even the sellers -- often cannot readily inform parties in the market what are the actual taxes (or even percentages) paid. (Not that it's much better in the US, for it's not -- especially if crossing state lines within the US.) And getting VAT rebates for purchases within the EU is not necessarily a piece of cake nor even always a possibility/worthwhile.
