There are quite a few handheld units out there that do auto-routing. My Garmin GPSMap76CS does it quite well (calculations are slower than what one gets out of a car GPS due to the slower CPU, and there are no audio announcements other than various beeps to indicate different events, but it's well implemented.) Garmin and other manufacturers make other auto-routing models.
