I avoid it now and only stay there when I need to cycle through SF hotels for status stays.

When I used to stay there all the time (about a week a month), the staff who knew me would always make sure I was in a suite if one was available. On my last one-night stay I got a ramshackle inside handicapped accessible room with peeling wallpaper.

It's a sad situation.
I stayed at the Palace last month and was upgraded to a very, very nice suite for the full 7 nights I was there. I have no complaints even remotely similar to your experience - to be honest, I have no complaints other than that some parts of the building are in need of renovation. The service I got was more than excellent and on par with what I would expect from a Luxury Collection hotel.

I do know a lot of people critisize the Palace hotel - I'm glad I did not cancel my booking due to that. This just shows that experiences can be very different at the same hotel .
