Challenge of the week: getting to Kiev without being ripped off

Here's the challenge:

You have to get to KBP on 13 July, and leave on 15 July in J. It should cost no more than £1,000, and you should at least earn some miles/TPs from the trip. Any suggestions?

The cheapest LHR-KBP flights in CE are pricing at £1,500 !!! For a 2 1/2 hour flight !!! That would be a shameless waste of money.

Funnily, the LGW-KBP flights (which last time I looked were the same price in CE) have now been lowered to £315 return. Presumably because they were flying empty in CE.

Now, that's a huge price differential. £1,500 from LHR and £315 from LGW. Same seat, same service, same everthing.

The trouble is the LGW flights don't operate on 13 or 15 July.

The only other ideas I have so far is do an ex-DUB for £1,000. Going out via HEL and onward on AY is pricing up even higher than £1,500. It seems cheaper to go on IB via MAD or BCN, but that is a ridiculous routing, even for me.

Going on MA via BUD or LX via ZRH are both around £500. But I hate to fly and get no Miles out of it. Is it useful to get some MA Miles to use against a future BA flight? Or LX miles in my SK account, which I will probably never use.

I hoping there's an obvious BA gateway I can fly to a reasonable cost, with a convenient onward connection on PS, but haven't found anything yet.

Such a dilemma.
