Yes. Better planning wouild help. Don't rely on the beneficence of others.

Last year I was going to be 11 miles short of requalifying on AA. Although I was 100% certain that the shortfall would be forgiven, I changed my routing on my December 31 flight so that there would be no need to ask for a favor.
