Let me add to that thought a bit, upgrader. I have no status (yet) and am flying ATL>LGW. I have called numerous times to try and sweet talk my way into rows 1-7, to no avail. On one particular conversation the operator informed me that those seats become available to anyone on the day of the flight, and I should treat it as if I were booking an award ticket and be on the phone at midnight to make the proper seat selection. I will definitely be doing this, and have been watching daily the seats I would like to be in.

Also, I read somewhere here that row 3A+B is held for either gate assignment or something else along those lines. I don't know for sure, but all the flights I have looked at have those seats grayed out, while many others are open. If it is true, it increases the chances for someone like myself or mpattdu of sitting up front.
