I don't know for sure, but all the flights I have looked at have those seats grayed out, while many others are open. If it is true, it increases the chances for someone like myself or mpattdu of sitting up front.

My wife and I were in 3A and 3B on our return from MAN-JFK last week and as Medallions had reserved the seats online well in advance. If I recall correctly they were also available online on several other JFK-MAN-JFK flights we were checking earlier. So unless it's a very recent change I don't think there is a greying out of those seats. May be that they just are popular and were taken on flights you checked.
