Yes, but this only works if the detector is switched on. If it is sitting in the trunk, there is no way for them to know it is there unless it is somehow switched on or they look inside the trunk.
Oh I know they have to be switched on. I don't think there would be a problem having one and keeping it in the trunk - it is not in use then.
