I ask because I don't know if they will allow the JFK-HEL-ARN portion since I don't plan to stop over in HEL, just connect to ARN. I know it would have worked in the past but JFK-HEL-ARN is no longer the "most direct route" if you don't stopover in HEL. Would I have to stopover in HEL rather than connect?

OW Awards do not follow the "most direct route" doctrine. You can pretty much connect anywhere as long as your connection does not exceed 6 hours for international and 4 hours for US domestic. It's possible to do DCA-JFK-HKG-HEL-LHR-ABX if you wanted to. Kind of a crazy routing but doable under the rules.
