That's what we did. If you are on points, you cannot upgrade in advance, it can only be done at check in.
At checkin, we were told no garden view club level available, only available was ocean view club. I am not cheap (normally), but the garden club was $150/night upgrade and ocean was $400/night.
The front desk person we were working with was not as helpful as I would have hoped for a Ritz. He used info that had been accurate earlier in the day
We took a regular room and I looked online and a garden club was available through reservations. I called the front desk and they moved us.
