Maybe I'd feel differently if I had broken mine, but I routinely sleep with them, and then roll all over them in bed after I've fallen asleep and have yet to damage them. Also, I suspect the decision to permanently fix the cord into the housing for the AA version was simply to eliminate the risk of losing the cord. It's interesting that they're set to HI, though, because poor quality audio systems, such as on airlines, are precisely the time when you want to be able to switch them to LO to reduce the distortion.
I prefer Shure E3 or E5...much smaller, better sound, more comfortable (depending on the shape of your ear canal. YMMV)
