Personally, the difference in service/comfort would have to be quite large before I would give up the non-stop, and I don't think that KL or DL would meet the level to warrant a connection (from LAX). Even if AF has lie-flat seats, the connection to intra-Europe C class would offset the benefits of a competitive J-class seat on SU.
