I guess it's just like flying to Hong Kong. I always use a ethnic travel agency for them too. I didn't realise it applied to South America too. I have only flown down to South America use points in the past (3 times) so I haven't tried to buy tickets. I hope if Varig does go belly up it doesn't affect award availability too much. It was always the greatest deals with the Star Alliance charts. IIRC 75,000 for Asia, 50,000 South America but both are 14 hour flights.
