Seriously, I've never had a problem carrying bottles on a flight. Typically, I prefer a rollaboard for that so I only have to "carry" it twice - once on and once off.
Never, ever, ever put glass bottles in checked baggage.
Well, I wouldn't be SO strident. I regularily get away with one or two bottles of wine in my checked suitcase. I make sure they're well-covered and surrounded by several layers of clothes on all sides going from, say, {MUC|FRA|LHR|CPH} to IAD or SFO.
Anything more than that, yes, I would want to do as carry-on.
