I called the platinum customer service line several weeks ago, and the CSR told me that point transfers can be made to anyone as long as the other person is redeeming an award. This goes against the T&C, but it might be an example where corporate policy is not reflected in the T&C.
A somewhat analogous situation before was when Marriott CSR said that suites were not included in the room upgrade guarantee. This was Marriott's policy for some time before they wrote it in the T&C.
