Do you think they know that A, Z and P, among others, are paid first class fares on various airlines? Maybe they go by seat number, (if it's low, they'll assume you're in FC) except of course B6 and WN.
I'm pretty sure I used the generic kiosks to check in for a CO flight in paid F (A class) and I didn't have a problem, but I don't remember exactly what was displayed on the bp.
