I just spent about 15 hours in 29J flying DTW - somewhere over Newfoundland - DTW - AMS. (See my other thread for details).
The slide in 29 J does stick out, but I don't think quite as much as in row 10. You also could not use it as a foot rest since the hinge cover is directly above. It did make a nice shelf for my MP3 player. I pulled my rolling laptop bag down and used that as a footrest. I actually got some pretty decent sleep on my second outbound from DTW for the night.
I did find the shoulder room a little restricted. It was not as bad when you can recline and have the extra depression of the window.
Edit to add: If you really want a view, don't take 29. There is no window, except for a 3" view port in the exit door. You have to lean backwards to look out the window behind you.
