The frustrating thing about this is that the check-in agent can perfectly easily let you change flights if they want to (i.e. there is nothing in the sytem to stop them doing it), so it is all up to the good will of the agent that you end up dealing with.

It is at least worth knowing that, in order to see whether some well oiled charm might work.
