I worked at a Holiday Inn in college and when this situation came up we would try to offer an alternative that would personally benefit the guest. We would usually offer a free night at the hotel for the future. Unfortunately the property where I worked was a franchisee so we could only offer free nights at our property. I don't know if other chains are corporate-owned but if so you might be able to get a free night at any property chain-wide.
