I've had this happen numerous times -- a problem with a hotel and a suggestion by the GM that a night be comped, or a discount applied. I always explain that, while that might make my client or firm happy, it does absolutely nothing for me and provides no incentive to stay with that hotel again. Usually, I'm offered points and, on occassion, have had wine and fruit plates sent to the room. That works out fine.
