You get the "really nice" kit on overnight flights (i.e. eastbound transatlantic) and you get the "lame" kits for day flgihts (i.e. westbound transatlantic). The assumption is you need all those nice things to refresh you after your sleep flying overnight, whereas people have less need for them westbound.
