I remember when it was fairly common for locals to make a "day trip" to another island, to see friends or go shopping. It also seems to me that it used to be much more common for locals to take a vacation on neighbor islands. In recent years, it has been about the same cost to vacation in California or Las Vegas as it has been to vacation in Maui or the Big Island (total cost, not just airfare). Lower costs could increase the popularity of weekend getaways.
