the cheapest way I know is by Travelling.
To maintain the platinum status, I flew on CO and KL
to make sure I get 100% EQM miles.

once in a while you will see the offers of EQM offers for
Credit cards, but that would be just 3000 or so miles.

On the other hand, Gold on Star Alliance has much better benefits.

PS: I earn the status on my own dime too.
