Yes, that is how it works, and it is for all connections. Works well. As for your other question about lunch, no idea what the current situation is (all airlines have been cutting back on short-haul meals a lot), but a couple of years ago QF served lavish meals SYD-MEL, despite being a 1 hour flight. I'm sure lunch is still worth it (plus there is food in the QP, though I suppose you don't have lounge access).
