From SFO we fly to Boston, overnight at the Hyatt Harborside, take the 9am flight to LHR and buy a LHR hotel on priceline, usually about $100. After a good nights sleep, we continue the next day and start our trip well rested.

That makes the trip extra long to spend two nights (one in BOS the other at LHR en route. I guess without the SFO-BOS redeye that makes it a necessity unless you want to go through LAX, which I prefer. SFO-LAX-LHR (redeye arriving at noon or so), then head into London and hop on the train.
