Left Luggage at Airport Carousel

Wondering if anyone knows the procedure for luggage that is left at the carousel. There is a possible scenario where I have a seperate MR flight that I may be short on connection time with and the luggage itself is not needed for that flight. I return back to the airport a week later.

What happens in those situations? I've always noticed racks where luggage is locked away, is that where they go? Will the airline take the luggage and hold on to it, or do something to it? BTW, the airport is YYZ.

I'm hoping if I do have to part ways with the luggage on the MR trip, I can go back to pick it up.

Any input appreciated.
