my dad is plat on spg and diamond on hyatt, so he would prob get upgrades @ both places, but i heard that hyatt beijing hardly gives anyone upgrade access to the lounge even if they are top tier...

The Great Wall Sheration is a little tired and outdated The location is OK but not as great as the location of the Grand Hyatt.
As a tourist, I would recommend the Grand Hyatt.
With regard to upgrades at the Grand Hyatt - I recently quizzed three separate sources (Grand Club, Front Desk and Assistant Manager) and the consistent statement of policy was that:
Providing that space is available for the proposed duration of stay,
Diamond members will be upgraded ONE CATEGORY.
The Grand Hyatt is a little more expensive.
