Absolutely true in my case! Frankly, IMHO, the highest Southwest fare is still very inexpensive. I always buy fully refundable tickets. Recently, during the last year, I have done exactly what you're saying: I buy two one-way tickets. I just find it easier to manage: on a day trip, I get to check in early. However, it also allows me to move easily from one flight to another--or in some cases from one airport to another. The price differential between the full fare and the next few fares (not fun fares!) is so small, that it's just more convenient for me always to purchase the full fare.
