They make sense for itins that are taking you from non-hub to non-hub; in these cases flying commercial will often mean a whole day spent connecting, with overnights in some cases.

The only person I personally know who has chartered jets didn't do that for business, but for personal use. They once took a group of people from Eureka, CA to Sedona, AZ for a weekend; left the house on the coast at 8am in the morning on Sat and got to the house at the destination around 10:30am, about 2 1/2 hours door to door. Flying commercial they would have connected a minimum of once and driven 120 extra miles or more, taking a total of at least 8 to 8 1/2 hours.

Obviously this cost a lot of money, but he can afford it, being worth mid-8-figures. I can't afford it, so I'll have to settle for a weekend bike ride with the family instead
