I was just trying to get a seat assignment (which I had no problem doing last night). I noticed today that the seat map had become available for one more flight when I did a dummy booking. I called the reservation desk and asked if I could choose a seat.

Sounds like you're talking about two different reservations ?? - Did you get a seat assignment for another flight last night and now you did a "dummy" booking for another flight or the same flight in what class of service ?
If you did the dummy booking in a high fare (Y, B, M) then that would explain why you had access to the full seat map. If you were trying to look at a seat map off one booking but had another booking in a much lower fare then that explains the mix-up.
I fail to see how the agent was rude, she probably figured out your deception and was annoyed that you were tying up higher fare inventory just to look at a seat map.
