I've had a GSM phone for years, and use it to call a designated someone once a day. If that someone doesn't hear from me - they call me. If I don't answer (which hasn't happened yet, knock on wood) they're supposed to ring the alarm bells. It's not a perfect system because the phone could be stolen during a mugging, but so far just having it along has given me a certain measure of peace.
