My Japanese bank card, which can be used internationally as it is part of the PLUS ATM network, has a daily withdrawl limit equiv of 30,000 US dollars in whatever the local currency is.
When I use it abroad in Canada, and say, wish to pull out 5 grand for whatever reason, most TD Banks that carry 50's and 20's are usually physically limited to $1,400 as that is actually the max amount of bills the bill dispenser can manage in one session. That was confirmed when I went to a TD bank teller to ask "How do I get more money outta your damn machine!!" hahaha... I was able to withdrawl multiple quantities of 1,400 CDN dollars though in one sitting. That was about 2 years ago.
However, now I have found it is hit and miss. Now sometimes it is only 1,200 or 800 dollars depending on if the ATM only dispenses 20's. Machines that dispense 50's can usually give you a larger max pay out.
Having become accustomed to the Japanese banking system, even with all its quirks, its really not uncommon to pull out, say 8 grand CDN equiv in Japanese yen. I've done it a few times when I was buying furniture for my apartment and paid cash (didn't have a credit card at that time and most Japanese stores don’t know what a 'debit/cash card' is to pay for at a store).
And yes most Japanese bank ATM's can dispense 8 grand in one go out of their dispensers, since you almost always get 100 dollar bill equivalents (10,000 YEN notes). I’ve never had enough cash in my cash account to find out what the actual physical max amount of bills is able to pull out of the dispenser in one go!
I do wish more Canadian ATM’s would carry 100 dollar bills. I can see the security risks though when someone gets taken at gun point to clear out their account. :/
