I guess what they're saying is "this isn't an arrivals lounge"

And strictly they're correct - I'm not sure what the guidance is on how far in advance of a flight you can show up and enter the lounge - 3 hours is usually the norm quoted for luggage.

That said, the girls in EDI are usually v helpful - maybe just explain your circumstances....
