Be careful about that though, especially with cell phones. Some manufacturers will absolutely refuse to recognise a warranty on one of their products if it wasn't initially sold in the country you're in.
I bought a phone in Mong Kok in the latter half of 2004. I was able to buy a European-branded phone for around HK$1000 less than the price for the SmarTone-branded version. The user interface was different, the plug was the European-style (but compared to the HK/UK version, that's not a bad thing), the colour scheme was different and the owners manual was in German, but I was able to get the phone I really wanted even though I had expected it to be outside my price range.
As a suggestion, find the phone you want at one of the reputable retailers (Fortress, Broadway, from the phone companies themselves, etc.) and see what their price is. That way you'll have at least some idea of whether the price you've bargained for is actually reasonable in the local market.
