Well, both times I did it, I booked less than 2 weeks in advance, and there was a fair amount of availability. There was certainly more availability in F on JFK-YVR than JFK-HKG or YVR-HKG (which I think was nil...). I realize not everybody has the flexibility to book last minute, and maybe availability isn't so good further in advance. Just my experiences.
