What do people think about actually buying the tickets through these search engine sites? Is it better to go direct to the airline and buy it? (even if a bit more? Especially since I plan to maybe change my return date-- so fees that might be associated?)
That's the beauty of search sites like the previously mentioned Kayak, Mobissimo, and the site I work for, PriceGrabber.com. When you do the search, you don't actually book with the search site. You are referred to the various merchants that sell the flight. So for example, let's say you find a flight you want to Managua on Continental. You'll be given the option of booking directly at Continental.com or possibly through an online travel agent like Orbitz.

One thing to note, Mobissimo has certainly made its focus on international, so they may have some more direct relationships than others. But it can't hurt to try a few sites and see which ones you like best.
