If you're stuck in a full fare situation anyway, I think the ~$40 upgrade to business class (on flights that have it) is worth while for some of the reasons already stated here (i.e. better treatment at airport), but there is nothing special about the onboard experience at all IMO. Plus, chances are, you'll be able to snag seats for 40-70% of full fare, in which case the cost of the upgrade is proportionately greater.
