Flying to Europe I would do it, you can sleep a lot better in LH's new C seats than in the old ones. Flying back to North America I would prefer to save 2-3 hours - but that is a personal preference, I know a lot of people who would rather go for the additional comfort.

The "sane" alternatives would be LH, OS, and LX (all with just one stop to NYC). Making it on the SQ flight would require an overnight stay in FRA. Then you could also go on all kind of bizare routings involving TAP, bmi, United if AC rules allow that kind of routing.
