That's standard routine for some marketing professionals. They scan magazines for articles and/or themes that me be relevant to their companies/clients to place (or avoid to place) ads around, or they scan magazines for articles/ads about/from competing companies. Then they cut those pages out for future reference. I once sat next to a guy doing that, and he actually was an airline executive. Of course, this being after 9/11, he just ripped out the pages. He managed to process at least half a dozen magazines during a 45 minute flight.
