Thumbs up Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel - Review

I had the pleasure of staying at the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport hotel for one night. I arrived at the hotel around 1500h from my train from Amsterdam Central rail station. The hotel was very easy to get to from the Terminal, essentially go up the escalator and following the air bridge from the terminal to the Sheraton - a short two minute walk from the terminal.

Upon arriving at the check-in counter, I was immediately welcomed by a very friendly agent. I handed her my credit card, and after a few key strokes, she handed me my key and informed me that as a Platinum member, I was pre-allocated in advance a suite without me even having to ask. I did not have to show my passport (unlike her sister hotel the Hotel Pulitzer!!). She then handed me the Platinum Amenity card, and I naturally chose the local gift which was a choice of a few porcelain items: coffee cup, salt and pepper shakers, or two egg holders. I chose the salt and pepper shakers, as this would come in handy as a small gift. I noticed that they did not have the 500 SPG points as an option. After handing back the card to her, she then gave me a envelop which outlined the lounge benefits and gave me directions to the lounge. Overall a very pleasant check-in experience - professional, efficient, and no small details were overlooked - from the warm welcome to the upgrade, to the lounge, and to the amenity card. I hope the Hotel Pulitzer Amsterdam could learn something or two.

I went up to my room, and automatically felt at ease. The suite that they had given was very nice - essentially two rooms. One room consisted of the bedroom, with the sleeper bed, and the other room consisted of the living room/dining room and office. Both were very modern, sleek and incredibly clean.

The living room had a large 32 inch plasma screen. Above the bar, the hotel had placed 2 large complimentary bottles of water - one was still water from Evian, and the other was sparkling Pellegrino. Each bottle had the sticker "with Compliments from the hotel" attached to it. A very nice touch indeed! In addition there was the obligatory Dutch waffle, and it only got better from there. I was also impressed to see along with the coffee maker, the room also had a tea pot, for those of people like me who drink tea rather than coffee. Thumbs up for doing that. Even at some of the 5* hotels don't do that...

In the bedroom side table there was a tray containing a rose, a complimentary bottle of Red wine "Caliterra 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon -from chile," two chocolate mints and a signed note from the assistant manager.

Lots of windows in the suite and had a great view of the airport.

There were two bathrooms - a guest bathroom by the living area, and the full bathroom in the bedroom, which had not only the standard lotions and shampoo, but it also contained a dental kit, vanity kit, a comb, and a shaving kit. There was a separate shower and tub.

At around 1600h I decided to check out the Club lounge on the 8th floor. I was informed by some FT members that the hotel had just renovated the lounge, essentially doubling the space. (see pictures) i proceeded to the lounge and was greeted by the attendant. The lounge was very nice - decent size and modern. The lounge was broken up into three rooms - the food area, the sitting area and on the other side the two computers and more sitting area. There was no one in the lounge. There was food laid out in the buffet - some vegetables, chips, cheese and crackers, and cookies. There was a few selection of wine - two whites and two Reds. There was also a nice selection of tea, and of course the cappucino/hot chocolate machine. The fridge was well stocked with soft drinks and there were two selections of beer - Heinekan and Budweiser. I went to check the computers, and noticed that there was fee to use internet - something like 3 Euro for 15 minutes.

After having a few cheese and crackers, I went down to my room to change to go to the gym. I make it a point when I travel to at least go to the gym as often as I can. As I entered my suite and the bedroom, I was pleasantly surprised to find on my bed a wrapped Platinum amenity gift. Nice touch! The porcelain salt and pepper will come in handy as a gift.

I took the elevator down to the first floor to hit the gym, and was very impressed with the very nice and very modern gym equipment housed in a very spacious floor. The treadmills were the TechnoGym type - with the built in plasma TV, touch screen controls, and built in fan to keep me from sweating too much during my run. After an hour run, I spent another hour with the various state of the art weight machine.. I was impressed.

After a quick shower, I walked over to the terminal and had a very nice curry dish at Yum Yum! i also went up to the viewing observation deck to see some planes before retiring for the night.

They have high speed wireless internet throughout the hotel! It costs 19 Euro for 24 hours, or 5 Euro for 1 hour.

There are only a few minor changes that I would recommend to make the stay even that much better:
(1) In the Club lounge, do offer at least a 15 minutes free internet access.. Guest who have access to the lounge are either high paying customers who have booked a suite or club floor or are Platinum members.. Charging for 15 minutes can look petty.
(2) Turn down service in Suites? Not sure if it is done iin Club rooms.
(3) Have slippers in Suites/Club rooms
(4) Wireless internet access kept disconnecting after 20 minutes and I had to re-login. Annoying.. can this be fixed? At the Hotel Pulitzer there was no problem. and it seemed both hotel used the same vendor.

Overall, very good first impression and a very good product! I will certainly be back!!
