My philosophy is to go to the FC check-in line with my NW upgrade cert in hand and ask if an upgrade is available. If yes, they book me in FC right there. If no, they have always just checked me in anyway. ^
This last January, flying SNA-SEA I was able to upgrade myself (using the upgrade cert) and the other 3 members of my family (at $50 a pop). We were given the entire front row of FC. Nice ending to a trip to Disneyland.
