If you must see a volcano there are two much closer to Barbados than Montserrat. There is a fairly active one on St. Vincent (70 miles from Barbados) which last erupted in 1971 and 1979 showering parts of Barbados with ash. There is another on St. Lucia (100 miles from Barbados) considered dormant but you wouldn't know it from the strong smell of sulphur that can carry for miles from the bubbling crater. Both volcanos (both called Soufrierre) can be easily visited with the one on St. Lucia boasting itself as the world's only "drive-in volcano." There are good air links between Barbados and both islands and a day trip is certainly possible although there is so much to see one should plan for at least an overnight trip. You can find a list of the airlines flying out of Barbados at - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantle...t#Flight_Times
