(Almost everyone else on that train was a railway fanatic - with cameras and audio equipment. I don't think the railway had ever seen so many passengers). That's certainly a beautiful region. (But OMG what a lot of snow).
How is it in winter? Did you visit a hot spring? I've wanted to go back for a long time and check ou the Yagen Valley's rotenburos when buried in snow, but even when I lived in Tokyo it was a little difficult to convince people to take a 10-hour bus ride
